Makgadikgadi offers one of Botswana's most unusual landscapes. Instead of focusing only on traditional big-game viewing, a visit can also be about experiencing vast open spaces, salt pans, grasslands, wildlife and dramatic skies.
The Makgadikgadi area forms part of a large system of salt pans within the Kalahari Basin.
The landscape is remarkably different from the Okavango Delta and Chobe region.
Large salt pans dominate parts of the landscape, while surrounding areas include grasslands, dunes, rocky areas and baobab trees.
For much of the year, some areas can be extremely dry. During good rainfall years, water can transform sections of the pans and attract wildlife and birds.
Depending on rainfall and season, visitors may see wildlife such as:
Zebra
Wildebeest
Flamingos
Other bird species
Antelope
Other wildlife around suitable water and grazing areas
Large concentrations of wildlife are particularly dependent on rainfall and water conditions.
For this reason, we do not promise flamingo numbers, migrations or specific wildlife sightings.

Makgadikgadi changes dramatically according to rainfall.
During dry periods, the pans can be extremely dry and open. During periods of good rainfall, water can collect in the pans and surrounding areas, attracting wildlife and birds.
Your experience will therefore depend on the time of year and conditions during your visit.
Makgadikgadi can form part of a longer Botswana itinerary. Depending on your travel plans, it may be combined with destinations such as the Okavango Delta, Moremi, Chobe or the Central Kalahari.
